Eight students participate in International Student Festival in Norway
Eight CCU students are participating in a CCU course titled "Global Perspectives: Migration," through which they are participating in the 2019 International Student Festival in Trondheim (ISFiT) in Norway's historical city of Trondheim from Feb. 7-17. This year's event brings together about 500 students from 145 countries to deliberate on the issue of global migration through workshops and plenary sessions, amid other cultural events culminating in the awarding of the Student Peace Prize.

CIB student wins internship with U.S. Embassy
Shannon Brophy, an intelligence and national securities studies major at CCU, will be spending the spring 2019 semester in the Sultanate of Oman as an intern with the United States Department of State. Brophy will join the U.S. embassy in Oman's capital, Muscat, as part of the US Department of State's Student Internship Program. This marks the first time a Coastal Carolina University student has been awarded this U.S. government internship.

Seven Coastal Carolina University students from various colleges and degree programs have been named the 2019 Dyer Fellows. Dyer Fellows are select students who study and attend workshops, culminating in an individualized research project on a topic of public policy; they also travel to Washington, D.C., to explore centers of policy formation and implementation.

CCU chapter of Beta Alpha Psi granted Superior Chapter status
The Lambda Kappa Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi at Coastal Carolina University was granted Superior Chapter status by the Beta Alpha Psi Board of Directors. Superior chapter recipients will receive a $500 award courtesy of KPMG and the KPMG Foundation. The faculty advisers for CCU's chapter of Beta Alpha Psi are Philip Njoroge, Ph.D., assistant professor of accounting, and Sheila Mitchell, lecturer of accounting. There are 30 CCU students in the chapter.

CCU students 'unpack' education abroad experiences at regional conference in Greenville, S.C.
The Education Abroad unit in the Center for Global Engagement at Coastal Carolina University took five students to attend the Lessons From Abroad conference in Greenville, S.C., on Sunday, Oct. 14. Sponsored by the South Carolina Association of International Educators and hosted by Furman University, the conference assists college students with the process of transitioning back to the United States after an education abroad experience. The conference also helps students to reflect on their time studying and living in another country. The five CCU students who participated in the conference are: Hannah Hamelman, a senior history major from Conway, S.C., studied abroad with Narxoz University in Kazakhstan, Spring 2018. Kyle Johnson, a senior communication major from Longs, S.C., studied abroad with Exeter University in the United Kingdom, Fall 2016, and Deakin University in Australia, Spring 2017. Troy Kinner, a senior art history major from Myrtle Beach, S.C., studied abroad with Osaka Gakuin University in Japan, Fall 2017. Victoria "Tori" Schroeder, a junior public health major from Cherry Valley, Ill., studied abroad with Veritas University in Costa Rica, Spring 2018. Zahra Slimani, a freshman interdisciplinary studies major from Myrtle Beach, S.C., spends each summer abroad in Morocco with family.

CCU students organize benefit for Hurricane Florence relief
Seventeen Coastal Carolina University students held a Hurricane Florence relief event on Monday, Nov. 12, at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach that raised $1,000. "We were excited to partner with House of Blues on obtaining a bit of relief for those affected by Hurricane Florence and its aftermath," says Deborah Breede, a professor of communication at CCU who teaches a communication activism course. "This disaster has impacted our community, our campus, and our students. My students stand 'Carolina Strong' with House of Blues and Horry County in order to raise funds for hurricane relief."

CCU Wind Ensemble performs classic river songs
Forty Coastal Carolina University students will perform in the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Garrett Griffin, assistant professor and director of bands for the Department of Music. The performance is on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. The concert includes six pieces, including traditional American river songs like "Shenandoah" and "Down the River."

CCU students bring Pulitzer Prize-winning 'Our Town' to the stage
Twenty-two Coastal Carolina University students will bring to life Thornton Wilder's timeless, Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Our Town," on Wednesday, Nov. 7, through Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Edwards Theatre at CCU. The landmark American drama tells the story of a small community that represents every town the world over. Wilder delivers universal truths on what it means to be human.

Fifteen students were accepted into the Call Me Mister program at Coastal Carolina University for the Fall of 2018.
