More than 1,200 graduate as part of CCU's Class of 2019
Coastal Carolina University graduates are exactly what the world needs, according to commencement speaker and doctoral candidate Leigha Peterson. Peterson addressed the graduating class of 2019 - more than 1,200 students - during three separate commencement ceremonies at the HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center May 10-11. "Whatever you are, put it out there," she said, "because it is better than good enough. It is exactly what the world needs!"

CCU Honors Class of 2019 is the largest yet
The Coastal Carolina University Honors Class of 2019 is the largest in history, with 83 graduates earning a total of 89 degrees. Each student has completed a rigorous curriculum consisting of at least 24 credit hours of honors courses while maintaining at least a cumulative GPA of 3.5. The average GPA of this spring's graduating class is 3.72. Each honors student also completes a final honors thesis or project which is presented in a public forum.

CCU students perform in percussion ensemble
Nineteen Coastal Carolina University students performed in a spring concert as members CalypSamba, CCU's premier world percussion ensemble, in April. The concert was under the direction of Jesse Willis, CCU associate professor of music. The concert was held in CCU's Wheelwright Auditorium on campus and integrated unique collaborations of students, music faculty and alumni. The performance also featured steelpan player Liam Teague from the University of Northern Illinois. The ensemble played six different percussion songs, including "Sunday Morning Funk," "Pearls" and "Steel Band Times."

CCU humanities students recognized by their departments
Coastal Carolina University students studying in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts were awarded recognition for outstanding academic work within their departments of study in a Student Achievement Award ceremony on April 25. Outstanding freshmen, sophomore and junior students were recognized, along with various competition winners.

CCU student earns Gilman Scholarship to go to Greece
Coastal Carolina University student Emily Doscher, a philosophy major, has been awarded a Gilman Scholarship worth $3,500 to support her cost of living abroad in Greece as an environmental law intern. The Gilman Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.

CCU students perform in wind ensemble
Twenty-eight Coastal Carolina University students performed in the music department's wind ensemble concert on Friday, April 26, in Wheelwright Auditorium. The performance featured an "American sounds, American voices" theme through seven different songs. The ensemble was under the direction of Garrett Griffin, associate professor of music and director of bands.

Students win 2019 Undergraduate Research Competition
Sixteen Coastal Carolina University students walked away with cash prizes after the annual Undergraduate Research Competition in April. More than 120 students submitted their work, illustrating the research talents of CCU students and the wealth of experiential learning opportunities at Coastal Carolina University. Presentations at the CCU Undergraduate Research Competition were judged by more than 80 faculty judges. Prizes were awarded for first ($150), second ($100), and third ($50) place in four award categories.

CCU students perform with Andy Harnsberger in percussion concert
More than a dozen Coastal Carolina University students performed in a percussion ensemble concert featuring Andy Harnsberger on April 16 in the university's Wheelwright Auditorium. The concert featured several of Harnsberger's pieces, as well as a variety of others, including Dvorak's String Quartet No. 12 in F Major. Harnsberger has been the featured artist at the Tamborimba Percussion Festival in Cali, Colombia, and the Patagonia Percussion Festival in Argentina. He is an associate professor of music and percussion coordinator at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn.

Coastal Carolina University held its annual Student Involvement Leadership Awards ceremony on April 29, 2019. The event recognizes students and student organizations who have excelled at leadership and service throughout the academic year. Eight students were awarded and seven organizations were recognized.

Solar ambassadors crowdfund to put solar array on VFW Post
The Coastal Carolina University Solar Ambassador student team is working with Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 10420 in Murrells Inlet to prevent 456,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions by installing solar panels on the facility. Students are raising $35,000 through crowdfunding to pay for the installation of a solar system on Post 10420, which will divert 65 energy of the total energy used. The clean energy produced by this solar system will prevent 456,000 pounds worth of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere, the equivalent of preventing the emissions from approximately 44 passenger vehicles. The Solar Ambassador program at CCU is a year-long program organized through San Francisco-based nonprofit Re-volv, whose goal is to empower local communities by providing solar to nonprofit organizations.

CCU's Peyton Mueller presents results of research
Coastal Carolina University student Peyton Mueller and her faculty mentor, Matt Murphy, presented research results at the 26th International Conference on Comparative Cognition, April 10-13, 2019, in Melbourne, Fla. The research, that came out of the Coastal Comparative Cognition Laboratory, looked at social influence on memory in pigeons.

Business leadership organization inducts new fellows
The Community and Business Engagement (CoBE) Institute at Coastal Carolina University inducted 13 new members at an induction ceremony on April 18. The CoBE Institute is a student-led organization that bridges the gap between the classroom and workplace experience by pairing high-achieving undergraduate business students with real-life business consulting projects. Students selected as CoBE Associates will receive instruction and mentoring as they gain real-world practical experience that will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while producing and providing high-quality solutions for business clients.

Coastal Carolina University announces 2019-2020 student government leaders
The results are in: Coastal Carolina University has four new leaders on the Student Government Association for 2019-2020. Jazz Jackson is the student body president; Khyle Mingo is the executive vice president; Clara Comiskey is the vice president of finance; and Rae'L Jackson is the vice president of public relations. The mission of the Student Government Association (SGA) is to provide Coastal Carolina University students with representation, services and advocacy within the Coastal Carolina University community. The SGA serves as the voice of the students and acts as a conduit between the students, administration, faculty and the alumni.

More than 120 Coastal Carolina University students presented their research at the Undergraduate Research Competition April 16-17. Students represented various majors and research topics, and they presented either oral or poster presentations. The Undergraduate Research Competition is a spring tradition at Coastal Carolina University.

Public health students attend health summit
Coastal Carolina University public health majors Erin O'Hagan and Erika Luke traveled to Columbia, S.C., to attend the Second Annual Minority Health Summit. The event complemented their PUBH 350 course which focuses upon building community coalitions to implement public health initiatives. After graduation, Erin plans pursue her interest in women's health among underserved populations. Erika wants to pursue a career as a child specialist assisting terminally ill patients. The event was sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control, the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.

CCU math majors volunteer at local tech fair
Nine current and former mathematics majors at CCU volunteered to help with a recent Rubik's Cube challenge. The fifth annual Rubik's Cube Challenge was a Rubik's Cube-solving competition that took place at the Horry County Tech Fair on April 10, 2019. The challenge involved both team solving (eight team members solve 25 cubes) and solo competitions. This year, there were competitors for both 2x2 and 3x3 cubes. The competitors were primarily from Horry County schools and ranged across all grade levels from first to 12th grades.

On March 7-9, several Coastal Carolina University math students attended the Southeastern Section meeting of the Mathematical Association of America at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. The students gave talks, presented posters and participated in math competitions. Two of the students won awards for their research presentations. Jeremiah Dunivin won an award for his presentation titled "Nevanlinna-Pick Interpolation on Certain Subalgebras of Bounded Analytic Functions."

CCU psychology students present research at regional conference
Four Coastal Carolina University psychology students presented results of their undergraduate research at the Southeastern Psychological Association conference March 20-22, 2019, in Jacksonville, Fla. The students were Maria Sparacino, VIctoria Riley-Lomedico, DIazia Torres-Ferraro, and Hannah Simpson. They were accompanied by faculty mentors Dr. Terry Pettijohn and Dr. Ryan Yoder.

Several marine science students at Coastal Carolina University traveled to Wilmington, N.C., to present their research at the March 2019 meeting of the Southeastern Estuarine Research Society. The research presentations were judged and awards were given. Nicholas Coleman won the best undergraduate poster award at the conference.

CCU student-athletes read to area kindergartners
On Tuesday, Feb. 19, more than 100 Coastal Carolina University student athletes spent the morning reading stories to 16 Horry County elementary schools as part of the United Way of Horry County Caring for Kindergartners program. Upon completing the book "How Full Is Your Bucket?", the young students were able to put the lessons they learned on display by drawing pictures and creating their own greeting cards to be distributed to elderly, homebound citizens throughout Horry County.

CCU student receives prestigious State Department scholarship to study Russian language
Hannah Hamelman has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study the Russian language this summer at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students. It's part of a government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century's globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

The student media staff at Coastal Carolina University traveled to New York City March 6-9 to attend the Student Media Conference hosted by the College Media Association. The staff includes editors and art directors on the student newspaper, The Chanticleer, the student features magazine, Tempo, and the student art and literary magazine, Archarios.
