Bailey Harding wins award at SEERS conference in Florida

2018 May 2

Three marine science majors at Coastal Carolina University - all sophomores - won awards at the Southeastern Estuarine Research Society (SEERS) conference in St. Augustine, Fla., on March 8-10.

Among the winners:

Bailey Harding, a marine science major from Felton, DE.

Bailey Harding won Best Undergraduate Oral Presentation for her presentation, "Sand compaction and ghost crab burrows: An analysis of morphology and volume."

Logan Masterson and Emeline Ward tied for Best Undergraduate Poster Presentation, for their presentations, "Ontongenetic changes in ghost crab behavior: size and gender effects," and "Histological analysis of limb bud development during regeneration in fiddler crabs," respectively.

These students also presented their research at the Undergraduate Research Competition held at CCU in late April, and all three were awarded SEERS Student Travel Awards valued at $150 each.

Eric Rosch, lecturer of marine science at CCU, was the students' research adviser and was impressed by the students' awards.

"All the other undergraduates presenting were either juniors or graduating seniors," he said. "I think that really speaks to their level of preparedness and professionalism."

SEERS is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the informal exchange of interdisciplinary information related to estuaries of the southeastern United States. Its membership is largely from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
